In our first indoor concert of the 2006 season, we supported Armagh True Blues in their fund-raiser at Ballyrea Orange Hall, Killylea.
Three bands were due to play at the event - Bessbrook True Blues; Downshire Guiding Star and Portadown Defenders.
We had arrived at the hall at approximately 9.15pm, where everything was taking shape. A disco was in full swing to keep
everyone entertained until the guest bands took to the floor.
First up, was Bessbrook True Blues. They appeared in style, wearing their alternative blue shirts, along with their
standard trousers. They produced a massive amount of noise, for only having 3 drums and 10 flutes. For one tune, the lead
tip substituted his hard-top drum, for the more traditional tenor drum. This gave an amazing sound from the drum corp,
with a mixture of hard-top and soft-top drumming. This appears to be the newest trend, as other bands have also used
a mixture of drums while playing.
The second band on display, was the Banbridge outfit, Downshire Guiding Star. They marched on to the floor led by their
colour party. With 4 drums and 14 flutes and following suit of Bessbrook, they too produced an awesome display. The energy from the bass
drummer was completely off the scale. They entertained the crowd playing an array of loyalist tunes. Near the end of their
performance, a member of Armagh True Blues decided to give his all on the bass drum.
The last and final band was of course ourselves. This was our first performance since Pride of the Maine's indoor concert
in October. We performed with a modest 4 drums and 12 flutes. We started off by playing Eaton Boat Song, which the
crowd seemed to enjoy by rhyming the words. We played several traditional and modern tunes like No Surrender, Dolly's Brae,
and Marching On. Again with ourselves, an Armagh True Blues bass drummer played several tunes, including the Sash.
Congratulations to Armagh True Blues for holding a successful event.
