Friday 3rd June - Kilcluney Volunteers - Markethill
Our second visit to the Markethill town, was in support of Kilcluney Volunteers, where they held their high-profiled
annual band parade. This is the biggest band parade to take part in Ulster, with 99 bands in attendance. Bands of all
styles travelled to the County Armagh town, with bands travelling from both sides of the border. Thousands of spectators
turned out to watch the parade in the scorching sunshine. The parade was well under control by the 20 strong marshalls,
who kept the parade flowing and stoppages to a minimum, which the host band must be commended for.
In contrast to last week, we had paraded with a fairly large band; consisting of 5 colour party, 1 drum major,
12 drums, 1 bass drummer and 17 flutes. An overall total of 36 members; compared to last weeks overall total of 17.
The hot and sticky weather could have affected our performance as we did not play our best on the night, although
we were playing well in certain parts of the parade. Especially walking up the hill in the centre of the town, playing
'Marching On'..
With 99 bands on parade, any band who received a mention in the awards should feel proud to have came out on top of the
competition. As proven in the results, East Belfast Protestant Boys were one of the best bands on parade on the night;
collecting six 1st prizes, including best overall band. Both Pride of the Hill and Carnmoney and Donaghadee Fusiliers
were playing well, with both bands producing a lot of noise from their bass drum alone.
The last band on parade was the host band, who marched their home town with 17 drums and 35 flutes, who were being followed by scores
of supporters.
