Friday 21st April 2006 - Loyal Sons of Benagh - Newry
For our first parade of the 2006 season, we supported Loyal Sons of Benagh in the predominately Nationalist town of Newry.
On arrival, the parade was in full swing with bands leaving the car park in fine tune. A total of 34 bands attended this
parade, assumed to be the biggest number of bands the host band has had at their annual band parade. All of our members
were eager to get parading and to get back in the swing of things.
We paraded the short parade route with 2 colour party (bannerette and 36th Ulster Division), 7 drums, 1 bass drummer and
15 flutes; a total of 25 members - satisfactory for our first parade of the year. Admittedly, the band was not in
fine tune, but for every band, when they restart the season they have to build on each performance. We played a series of tunes
along the Belfast Road, finishing with Auld Orange Flute at the Orange Hall, in front of dozens of other band members.
One of the bands on display to catch the eye was Kilcluney Volunteers, Markethill Volunteers, Markethill, Markethill. Their drum corp seems to have improved
over the winter, with strong bass supplementing the snare. Another drum corp on top form, was that of Clogher Protestant Boys.
