Friday 4th August - Mourne Young Defenders - Kilkeel
We travelled to the costal town of Kilkeel, in support of one of the leading melody flute bands, Mourne Young Defenders,
who are also celebrating their 30th anniversary this year.
This parade was well supported through bands, but the number of people spectating the parade was notably lower than
that of recent years. A new route was devised for this parade, with this parade starting by the coast, and
avoiding the long back road, which is used for other Kilkeel band parades. As we were arriving late, we paraded a shortened
route, to allow way for the prepared fireworks display.
We had played very well on the night, with the bass drum being the best played deparment on the night. We paraded with
3 colour party, 1 drum major, 8 drums, 2 bass drummers and 17 flutes. An overall total of 31 members. We had played
well throughout the parade, but we were at our best finishing off with Marching On.
A fine selection of bands were on parade, including Armagh True Blues and Ballynahinch Protestant Boys, who had a very powerful bass. Ballykeel
Loyal Sons of Ulster were another band playing well, with only 6 drums and 12 flutes. A mention must go to East
Belfast Protestant Boys who walked with a colour party of 9 bearers; one more than what they had paraded with in Lisbellaw,
one week previous.
