Friday 18th August - Portadown Defenders FB - Portadown Friday 18th August saw our band hold our annual band parade, in which disappointedly turned out to be the wettest parade of the year, and quite possibly the worst of the decade. One thing we can't depend on is the weather and this night proved it. Despite the horrendous conditions, a total of 34 bands were represented on the night. The parade was led by Drumderg Loyalists Keady who were in fine form. Several bands paraded as early as possible as they were making their way for another parade in Portavgoie held on the same night. The total money raised on the night will be disclosed soon. A wide selection of bands including melody flute, blood and thunder flute and accordion, from right across 5 counties. The best band on parade was the superb Mourne Young Defenders who had collected six of the avialable trophies including best overall band. On the night, there were some fantastic drum corps on parade - including Donaghadee Fusiliers and Kilcuney Volunteers. Red Hand Defenders Downpatrick were also playing well with their unique style, as were South Down DUP. From the small blood and thunder, Craigavon Protestant Boys, Pride of the Frontier and Castlederg Young Loyalists were all the best of the bunch, and this was evident from the results in that section. We started to parade the town shortly after 7pm, with a band consiting of 3 colour party, 1 drum major, 11 drums, 2 bass drummers and 19 flutes. An overall total of 36 members. The rain didn't dampen our spirits as the band played superb throughout the parade, with Grenadiers and the Orangeman and Marching On being the best played tunes of the night. We would like to thank every single band who supported our band at our annual band parade. We will endeavour to return the support throughout the rest of the year and next year in anyway possible. We would also like to thank those who donated money via the street collection or by other means, and those who supported the band's function after the parade.
