Friday 31st March - PDFB Band Concert - Portadown

This was our second indoor concert we had held this season. The night was held in Carleton Street Orange Hall, with 3 guest bands in attendance - Derrylee FB, Armagh True Blues FB and Castlederg Young Loyalists FB.

The night got under way with Armagh True Blues taking to the floor, shortly after 10pm. They marched on to the floor with 5 drums and 13 flutes. Volume was flowing from all departments of the band, especially their flute core. The band played a short set consisting of traditional tunes like The Sash and Londonderry on the Foyle.

After an hours interval, the next band up was Derrylee. The band intended to go out and enjoy themselves, and they done just that. On the night, they had played with 5 drums and 11 flutes. Like Armagh True Blues, they had played a selection of traditional tunes which were enjoyed by the crowd. Derrylee also marched onto the floor with two standards; the flag of Scotland; and the flag of Ulster.

The third and final band of the night, travelling over 60 miles was Castlederg Young Loyalists. This band never ceases to amaze, as they had played with 2 drums and 9 flutes, along with a full colour party, in full uniform. As they marched on to the floor, the musicians formed in a 'pipe-band' style, in that of the flautists and side drummers gathered in a circular formation, with the bass drummer formed in the centre of the circle. They're drum settings had everyone tapping their foot along to their unique style. Playing for just over 30 minutes, they finished their set with a rendition of Absent Friends, beginning with a flute solo, with the rest of the band joining in at the chorus.

Firstly we would like to thank the 3 supporting acts; Derrylee FB, Armagh True Blues FB and Castlederg Young Loyalists FB, and wish them all the best for the 2006 marching season.
Thanks must also go to Loyalist FM who provided the entertainment and last but not least all those who attended and supported the band on the night, and without your help, the night would not have been a success.
