No rest for the wicked is the key phrase, as for the second consecutive day, the band had another long day ahead of them,
for the annual black parade, hosted by Sir Knight Alfred Buller Memorial RBP No.1000 in Scarva. This is undoubtedly one of
the biggest parades in the country as some 85,000 pack in to the tiny village, with 70 bands attend the event from
across the United Kingdom. In total, 6 districts attend this parade, with those coming from Tandragee, Markethill,
Banbridge Newry, Rathfriland, Lower Iveagh and Portadown.
Our day started off at Corcrain Orange Hall, where we led Corcrain RBP 141 to Carleton Street Orange Hall, where the
Portadown District Chapter No. 5 where parading the town. From our feeder parade, 3 bands led several black
preceptories; Clonmacash Pipe, Red Hand Defenders Downpatrick, and of course ourselves.
The Portadown District parade is one of the biggest to take place, as nearly 20 bands parade through the town. The
district parade was led by Dungannon Silver. As traditional, an Act of Rememberance took place at the War Memorial
in the town centre, during the parade.
On our arrival in Scarva, the village was already packed out, with feeder parades marching to the starting point. It wasn't
long before the main parade took place, with a lot of bands parading with large numbers. Several bands paraded with
more than 30 flutes, namely Armagh True Blues, Kilcluney Volunteers, Pride of the Hill and Drumderg Loyalists. We paraded
with a slightly smaller band than the day previous, with 5 colour party, 1 drum major, 1 marshall, 8 drums, 3 bass
drummers and 19 flutes. An overall total of 37 members.
After parading the return leg of Scarva and Portadown, we made our way back to Corcrain Orange Hall to end the day. As
the Orange Hall is in a predominately nationalist area, there was a moderate police presence due to the several
nationalists who had gathered at the top of Ballyoran Hill. Probably to see how bright and colourful our culture really is.
