Monday 7th August - Red Hand Defenders - Downpatrick
For the first time in a number of years, the band travelled to the outskirts of Downpatrick for the annual band parade
held by the Red Hand Defenders. This parade is heavily restricted, as is not allowed to enter Downpatrick town centre,
due to the town being predominately Nationalist. Instead, the parade is only permitted on one stretch of road, where it
is then re-routed by a PSNI barricade, where several police landrovers where stationed including a police operated camera.
Meanwhile, the parade was very well supported for a Monday night schedule. A total of 45 bands travelled to the
County Down town. Red Hand Defenders deserved a well supported parade, as they travel across the country in support of
other bands, week-in-week-out.
We paraded with a smaller band that usual, consisting of 1 colour party, 5 drums, 1 bass drummer and 13 flutes. An overall
total of 20 members. We surprisingly played well despite the small numbers and the constant passing of other bands.
A lot of the other bands on parade had marched with smaller numbers. Nevertheless, the talent was still at a high standard.
South Belfast Young Conquerors were in fine form. From the smaller blood and thunder bands, Bessbrook True Blues
had maintained their volume, despite being small in numbers.
