Friday 28th April 2006 - Dollingstown Star of the North - Lurgan

We made the short visit to the local town of Lurgan, to support Dollingstown Star of the North in their annual band parade. A large turnout of bands supported the host band, on what turned out to be a cold and blustery night. Not a good night for any colour party. As per usual, the Parades Commission quango had placed restrictions on this parade, in that the parade must be dispersed by 10.30pm, with all bands prevented from parading no further than the war memorial.

On parade, we had our biggest turnout of this season - 5 colour party (bannerette, Scottish flag, 36th Ulster Division flag, Ulster flag and the Union Jack), 1 drum major, 10 drums, 2 bass drummers and 17 flutes; an overall total of 35 members.
We got off to a great start for the second consecutive weekend, by playing Eaton Boat Song, which appears to have an 'motivational' touch to all members. The parade route allows bands to have 'blow-off' competitions. On route, we passed bands such as Downshire Guiding Star, Kilcluney Volunteers South Down Defenders - who were all playing well. We obtained a 3rd place in the results, in the category of Best Local band.

Several bands were sporting new uniforms on the night. Most notable were the local bands; Craigavon Protestant Boys and Pioneers (pictures of both these bands can be seen below), who were both looking well, including Whitewell Defenders. A new uniform can give any band a vital boost.
So far this season, colour parties seem to have a great impact on bands. A lot of bands are starting to increase the size of their flag bearers, like both Newry bands; Loyal Sons of Benagh and South Down Defenders. A tidy colour party, with flags blowing in the wind can raise any bands' standard.
With the start of the 2006 season now in full swing and bloom, we can only try and imagine what the months of July and August will be like. Long may it continue.
