We always knew it was going to be a busy night, as we were supporting two bands in the one night. Not a thing we frequently do, but when possible, it
can be managed.
We started the night off in Markethill for the parade of Enagh Accordion, who were donating all the proceeds they collected on the night, to the Ulster
Cancer Foundation. A truly respectable thing to do - which must be highlighted. A wide variety of bands from across the board where on parade, like
melody flute, blood and thunder flute, brass, silver, pipe and even accordion - which is the reason why large crowds had gathered in the town, especially
along Main Street. Indeed, any parade in Markethill gathers a good crowd, possibly something set by Kilcluney Volunteers who hold the largest band
parade in June.
After winning a first spot trophy the night previous, a lot of members set out with their heads held high, like they would do at any parade. After a
few warm up tunes, we returned to our best, playing a few of the less-frequent tunes like The Fleet and Loyal Heart. We paraded with 3
colour party, 1 drum major, 7 drums, 1 bass drummer and 17 flutes - an overall total of 29 members.
Drumderg Loyalists were one of the better bands on parade and are currently waiting on their new uniform to be manufactured, which will of course complete the band.
New band and locals to the host, Markethill Protestant Boys were on parade. Wearing Pride of the Hills old uniform, appear to have a group of
dedicated members, who will hopefully carry the band through the years.
Saturday 28 April - Ballylesson Old Boys - Dunmurry
After parading in Markethill, it was a constant rush to travel to Dunmurry for the parade of Ballylesson Old Boys, where 24 bands were in support.
Unfortunately we were that late, the local police were near refusing our band to parade. Thankfully we came to an agreement and completed a shortened route.
A decent crowd had gathered around the crossroads, where all the bands had finished parading.
Parading with a slightly smaller band than in Markethill, we marched with 4 colour party, 1 drum major, 6 drums, 1 bass drummer and 16 flutes - an overall
total of 28 members. We picked up on our performance from Markethill and even so, much tighter than we did in Lurgan the previous night. We received a great
welcome coming back through the village playing Eaton Boat Song, which was possibly the best played tune of the weekend. To the surprise of everyone,
our good performance earned us a 3rd - Large Blood and Thunder spot, which was totally unexpected.
Judging by the results, Dunloy Acc. Accordion and Pride of the Hill must have been the best of the bunch, with them receiving 1st - and 2nd - respectively in the
best overall band. Ballyhalbert were also on fine form, which seen them share the third large blood and thunder spot with ourselves.
