`Friday 1st June - Kilcluney Volunteers - Markethill

Our second return to the town of Markethill, was for the annual band parade organised by Kilcluney Volunteers, which also is the biggest band parade of the year. Kilcluney broke the 'ton' mark by 8 bands more than the previous year, with 107 being on parade, with bands from Ulster, the Republic and Scotland taking part. The parade was led by Charles Watson Memorial.

The crowds had lined the entire route, especially in the town centre where the rows were several deep. This really shows the impact this parade has on the loyalist band scene, with spectators travelling from the north of Ulster and indeed Scotland, just to watch a band parade. And indeed, it is one of the Best parades of the year to watch, due to the wide variety of bands quickly flowing the route.

We were band number 40 on parade, with the biggest band we have had this year - consisting of 4 colour party, 1 drum major, 11 drums, 1 bass drummer and 20 flutes; an overall total of 37 members, which is the biggest turnout we have had since the 2006 Twelfth. We started off with a 'lesser' played tune, called Beefy's March, which actually sounded well. This set the standard for the rest of the night and we continued the good performance throughout.

With over a hundred bands on parade, it would have been a nightmare to judge. Kilkeel Melody band, Pride of Pride of Ballinran walked away with the Best Overall Band trophy, also collecting Best Colour Party, Best Melody Drum Corps, Best Melody Style and Appearance, Best Melody March and Discipline and Best Melody Band.

Although not a category on the night, two contenders for Best Entertaining were Sons of KAI and Cloughfern Young Conquerors, both from Belfast. Both bands let their hair down on Main Street, with Cloughern giving their rendition of Running Bear for the crowd.

Congratulations to Kilcluney Volunteers on achieving their biggest band parade ever and organising a well marshalled parade.
