Saturday 3 March - South Belfast Young Conquerors, Battle of the Bands - South Belfast
For our second outing of the year, we supported South Belfast Young Conquerors at the second heat of their Battle of the Bands event. The event was
well organised with Finaghy True Blues; Newtownards Volunteer Flute; Pride of the Hill Carnmoney and Rising Sons, East Belfast, all taking
part in the event. In the first heat, Shankill Sons of Ulster, Upper Falls Protestant Boys and Ballysillan Volunteers took part, will all three bands
going through to the final.
Due to our late arrival, we missed Finaghy True Blues performance as they had to participate in another event elsewhere. This shows the determination of
bands today, as they are prepared to support two bands on the same night, and at indoor events.
Shortly after our arrival, we marched on to the floor with 6 drums, 1 bass drummer and 14 flutes. With ourselves and all the other bands, we were asked
to play a selection of tunes for a period of twenty minutes, which, for us, included Daddy's Uniform, Love So Well and Eaton Boat Song.
Surprisingly our flutes sounded well for the small, yet adequate amount playing, as well as coming third overall and booking our spot in the final.
The next band up was Newtownards Volunteer Flute, playing with 5 drums and 14 flutes. A band that we wouldn't normally have the pleasure
of watching, they impressed most of audience. The band were smartly dressed in their full uniform, which must have been hard to hack in a heated environment.
The fourth band to play was Pride of the Hill, Carnmoney, wearing their full uniform except for exchanging their tunics for pilot shirts. They marched onto
the floor with 5 drums and 9 flutes, which is adequate for an indoor event.
The last and final band to perform was East Belfast outfit, Rising Sons. The band impressed everyone on the night and deservedly went home with 1st place
as well as booking their spot in the final, thanks to their flute and drum solos, as seen in our videos.
The final will take place in Donegall Pass Community Centre on Saturday 31st March 2007, with Sons of Ulster Shankill; Upper Falls Protestant Boys; Ballysillan
Volunteers; Rising Sons; Newtownards Volunteer Flute and ourselves battling it out.
