Friday 4th April - Portadown Defenders FB Indoor Concert - Carleton Street Orange Hall, Portadown
With the 2008 season now established, we held our second and final indoor concert of the pre-season. As per usual, the concert was held in Carleton Orange Hall, Portadown. With two guest bands supporting – Defenders of the Rock FB, Lisbellaw and Pride of the Maine FB, Ballymena. We completed the line-up by performing ourselves – which was nothing more than extra practise! The night kicked off at 9pm with music being provided by of Loyalist FM. As the night progressed, the boys from Ballymena certainly tried to get the atmosphere ripened.
The first band to take the floor, who made the journey from Lisbellaw, Co. Fermanagh, was Defenders of the Rock. They played with 4 drums, 1 bass drummer and 6 flutes. The band looked smart wearing shirts and peak hats with the drummers also wearing gloves. They played well for the small amount of band members they had, with a lot of noise coming off the bass.
After a short interval, Pride of the Maine marched onto the floor. The band played with similar numbers to Defenders of the Rock, 6 drums, 2 bass drummers and 9 flutes. As per usual, they played in their traditional ‘jiggy-style’, with their final tune ‘Glasgow Reel’ proving most popular.
After we had finished the raffle, we ourselves took to the floor, with a reasonable turnout of 7 drums, 1 bass drummer and 16 flutes. We played surprisingly well for the start of the season and growing with more confidence in our new tune ‘The Ulster Tower’. We played a range of traditional and modern tunes, with ‘Build my Gallows’ standing out for many on the night.
The night concluded with a disco and a game of ‘Pitch’n’Toss’.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank both Defenders of the Rock and Pride of the Maine for travelling the distances of 53 and 44 miles respectively. Thanks must also go to Loyalists FM for proving the high quality entertainment; Carleton Social Club for the use of the hall; and not forgetting those who supported the band in any shape or form.
